Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy

in Helston, Cornwall.

I offer contemporary psychoanalytical psychotherapy sessions.

My practice is located centrally in Helston, Cornwall.

There are many reasons why someone might decide to seek psychoanalytical therapy. You may be facing an unexpected life situation that you find difficult to cope with (separation, bereavement, illness, redundancy…) or are struggling with painful and unsettling feelings such as sadness, anger or anxiety. Psychotherapy not only significantly reduces psychological suffering, but improves health and wellbeing and opens up the capacity to live a more fulfilling life.

Psychoanalysis is an invitation to speak— not only about what worries and troubles you, but simply about the things that matter to you.

Instead of ready-made answers or advice, I offer a safe space, free from judgement, where you can learn to listen to yourself and be heard without preconceptions. By doing so, you can come to a better understanding of who you are and what prevents you from leading a richer, more meaningful life.

What is Psychoanalysis?

WHAT IS PSYCHOANALYSIS?

Psychoanalysis is a form of talking therapy and therapeutic method created in the late nineteenth century by the Viennese physician and neurologist Sigmund Freud. Psychoanalysis recognises the influence of the unconscious and sees that our conscious thoughts and feelings are largely determined by unconscious impressions and desires, which we are not only unaware of, but can often be at odds with our conscious beliefs and wants.

Psychoanalysis not only significantly reduces psychological suffering, but improves health and wellbeing and opens up the capacity to live a more fulfilling life.

As a theory of the human mind Psychoanalysis is constantly evolving, responding in a questioning and thoughtful way to the ever changing worlds we live in. Psychoanalysts use this knowledge and understanding to better help the people they treat.

WHY HAVE THERAPY?

The decision to speak about what worries and troubles us, does not necessarily need to be the result of a life crisis. It can also be determined by a wish to understand oneself better, to understand one’s desires, beliefs and values, to free oneself from problematic patterns of behaviour, to learn to better tolerate conflict and find new means of self-realisation.

Sometimes we don’t understand the beliefs and fears that shape our way of living and looking at the world, as they have become ingrained and automatic. We can find ourselves repeating destructive behaviours, feeling stuck in unhappy relationships and stunting our emotional, creative and professional development.

Psychoanalytic therapy can help us to better understand ourselves and to work through our difficulties in a safe and confidential space, where it is possible to express one’s thoughts and wishes freely and openly. It offers the chance to connect with and understand ourselves at a deeper more unconscious level, allowing the discovery of what holds us back, enabling the chance to change old patterns of behaviour and find new ways of approaching, and overcoming difficulties.

WHERE DO I START?

An initial (free) consultation can be arranged by telephone or email. During our first session we will discuss your situation and the possibilities of us working together. There is always space and time for questions and any other concerns you might have. Practicalities such as session times and frequency will also be discussed.

My full fee is £45 per session, but I operate a sliding scale for those who need to negotiate the amount. I do have a number of low-cost spaces available for those otherwise unable to afford therapy. This can be discussed during our initial consultation too.

Choosing a psychotherapist who is right for you is vital to the success of any therapy – if you feel my work is not what you are looking for, I will be happy to suggest alternatives or refer you to a colleague.

 About Me

I am currently in candidacy and undertaking postgraduate training with The Society for Social and Critical Psychoanalysis. I take referrals through their low cost Psychoanalytic Clinic, alongside private practice. My training is registered and accredited by the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP).

I have an academic background in Psychology, Philosophy and Anthropology. Before beginning my clinical training, I taught and lectured throughout Secondary, Further and Higher Education.

I have worked with individuals with a range of difficulties including relationship problems and addiction, bereavement, a loss of meaning or purpose in life, depression, eating disorders and self-harm, anxiety and panic attacks.

My clinical practice is influenced by the way in which contemporary life influences, impacts and informs the way we live and understand ourselves.

Covid 19

The pandemic has forced us all to find new ways of doing things and the same is true in terms of my practice.

A number of patients swapped the couch for walking sessions during lockdown, making use of the beautiful outdoor spaces nearby.
